Ganesh is known in Buddhism as the Remover of Obstacles and is the favorite god of writers and students. This piece, from Bali, dates back to the early 20th century. Ganesh appears to have a broken tusk, which he holds in one hand to write down the Mahabharata, the epic poem of India. The figure has a face on the back of its head, which depicts a protective diety often seen over doorways.
